Angela Spindler, a renowned designer, has crafted a unique packaging solution for Jacobs Coffee. The client's desire for a product that stood out in the market, offered cost efficiencies, and practicality, inspired Spindler to reimagine the typical coffee bean bag. The result is a design that combines conventional packaging with a box-style lid, offering both functional stackability and large format space for branding and product differentiation.
The design's unique properties lie in its lid, which employs winged engineering to hold it in place. The wings reverse fold up against the side panels and then catch in place in the fold of the bag, ensuring the lid cannot slip off. This innovative approach to packaging design not only meets the client's criteria but also adds aesthetic appeal to the product.
The production process was carefully considered to meet the needs of the start-up company. Small production runs allowed the bags to be printed with a rubber stamp, offering the client flexibility to order in small quantities. The lids, printed with 3 PMS colours on 400um cellokarta, were embossed and had a satin overall varnish applied. This process enabled a cost-effective print matrix to be established, allowing the client to batch order the variants as required.
Spindler's design faced several challenges, including the client's desire for a flat top bag that could be held in place without adhesion. The solution was a perfect marriage of form, function, and aesthetic appeal. The design provides the consumer with strong brand messaging and product differentiation defined by a distinctive colour and numbering system. The functionality of the lid provides a flat surface for stacking of product, and the integrity of the beans remains as the bags are sealed.
The Jacobs Coffee packaging design project, which began in April 2013 and was completed in January 2014, is a testament to Spindler's innovative approach to design. The design was awarded Platinum in A' Packaging Design Award in 2015, recognizing world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing.
In conclusion, Angela Spindler's Jacobs Coffee packaging design is a unique and innovative solution that meets the practical needs of a start-up company while offering a visually appealing product that stands out in the market. The design's recognition with the Platinum A' Design Award in 2015 further underscores its exceptional quality and innovation.
